llangollen Sat (22).JPG

Llangollen - Horseshoe Falls - Crucis Abbey - Castell Dinan Bran - 8 Miles - 1785ft Ascent

Thirteen of us watched the pouring rain over breakfast thinking it was going to be a very soggy day with little or no views from the hills. We set of from Llangollen in steady rain and crossed the River Dee to climb the hills to the west of Llangollen through the woods full of Primroses and Wood Anemones  to "The Duke". We then dropped back down into the valley to cross the river at Berwyn by the Chain Bridge. From here we walked on to the Horseshoe Falls and on to the Llantysilio Hall Church where we had a coffee break. By now the rain had eased to a drizzle and we walked around the base of Coed Hyddyn to the Crucis Abbey where we had lunch in the odd heavy shower.. After lunch the weather cleared as we climbed steadily on the Clwydian Way to Bryn-hyfryd where we had marvelous views over the Dee Valley. On past Dinbren Hall we skirted around the base of Castell Dinan Bran then climbed the steep hill to a height of over 1000ft to the castle and its spectacular views over Llangollen. To finish the walk we dropped down into Llangollen and treated ourselves to an Ice Cream at the Llangollen Canal Wharf. An absolutely fantastic walk with many wild spring flowers and great views.

Gunpowder-Treason and Plot! - Sunday 19th March 2017

Braunston March 2017 (33).JPG

Braunston - Ashby St Ledgers - 7.5 Miles - 650ft Ascent

On a cold and very blustery day 18 of us started from the pretty village of Braunston walking downhill to the Grand Union Canal and Braunston Marina. From the marina we walked east along the tow path to the western portal of Braunston Tunnel. As there is no towpath through the tunnel we took the route the canal horses would have taken over the hill to the eastern end of the tunnel a distance of 1.25 miles. At the eastern portal of the tunnel we stopped for coffee and watched the narrow boats go by.From the portal we walked through the woods to the Welton Road. From here we walked past Warfe Farm up hill into Welton where we had lunch at the White Horse. After lunch we walked through the village and took the footpath across the fields to Ashby St Ledgers and the Manor House where the Gunpowder Plot was planned in a room above the gatehouse (see main picture). The Manor House was owned by the Catesby family at the time and Robert Catesby was one of the conspirators. The manor's central location was also more convenient to the houses of the Catesby's many friends and relations. It is this central location that made Ashby St Ledgers a type of 'Command Centre' during the planning of the Gunpowder Plot. After visiting the church and its exhibition we walked the 2.5 miles back to Braunston along the Jurassic Way. A very interesting walk.
