A Walk in the Border Country - 27th November 2016

November 2016 - Wakerley Woods - Tixover - Duddington - Fineshade Woods - 8.5 Miles - 600ft Ascent

Starting from the Wakerley Woods car park 15 of us walked down into the Welland Valley on the Jurassic Way to Wakerley, Going past the church and over the river Welland into Rutland we took the  Rutland Round walk which followed the river to Tixover. Passing Tixover Hall we re-crossed the river back into Northamptonshire into the lovely village of Duddington where we had coffee. Leaving the village we climbed into Fineshade Woods and walked to the visitor centre where we had lunch. Back on the Jurassic Way we made our way back to the car park via Fineshade Abbey and Wakerley Great Woods. Lucky with the weather with a watery November sun all day. A walk to be recommended.

Stoke Albany - Wilbarston - 30th October 2016

Stoke Albany - Brampton Ash - Ashley - Wilbarston - 9 Miles - 848ft Ascent

15 of us walked from Stoke Albany through the rolling countryside of north Northamptonshire to Ashley via Brampton Ash. We walked on a mixture of the Jurassic and Macmillan Ways climbing some very steep hills for Northamptonshire. After stopping for coffee at the the "Red Hovel" farm and rescuing a sheep from the brambles we stopped for lunch at the The George in Ashley. After lunch we walked back to Stoke Albany via Wilbarston and the Brig Lane. A great walk in lovely weather.

Autumn Weekend Away 2016 - Wortley Hall - South Yorkshire – Sunday 2nd October 2016

Langsett Barn - Langsett Bank - Swinden - Hordron Road - Little Don River - 5.25 miles - 765ft Ascent

Eleven of us met at Langsett Barn for a walk through the Peak District. Leaving by a footpath along the top of Langsett Bank we walked through the pine woods to Swinden Lane. Crossing over the ford at Fox Clough we climbed up the Hordron Road on to the moor. On reaching the top we took a path across open countryside and stopped for coffee at a convenient collapsed wall. After coffee we dropped down to the Little Don River and followed its undulating course back to the car park through the lovely woods. Typical Peak District mixed countryside in untypical brilliant sunshine.

Autumn Weekend Away 2016 - Wortley Hall - South Yorkshire - Saturday 1st October 2016

Wortley Hall - Stainborough Hall - Hood Green - Crane Moor - 9.75 Miles - 950ft Ascent

Meeting outside the main entrance of Wortley Hall 12 of us walked through the grounds past Park House and on to Westwood Lodge. Here we took a footpath through High Woods and on to Hermit Hall. On through Green Springs we stopped for coffee in the woods, over Moor Dyke we climbed up the hill into Stainborough Park. taking the permissive  paths over the estate we visited The Duke of Argyle's Monument, The Temple and the Serpentine Bridge before stopping for lunch at the visitor centre. After lunch we walked past Wentworth and Stainborough Castles and on through Hood Green and Stainborough Fold to Crane Moor. From Crane Moor we climbed up to Bullock Well and walked along the ridge back to Wortley Hall through Well Houses. A great introduction to the area known as the East Peak of South Yorkshire

A Walk in the Woods - Sunday 25th September 2016

Woburn Sands - Bow Brickhill - Woburn Golf Course - Little Brickhill - Wayn Close - Woburn - Wavenden Heath - 9 Miles - 956ft Ascent

11 of us started the walk from St Micheal's Church near Woburn Sands. Unfortunately after 3/4 of a mile Gwen slipped  and sprained her ankle.  Allan agreed to take her back home while the rest of us continued on the walk. We walked through some magnificent woods along the Greensand  Ridge to Bow Brickhill. Then on by the Woburn Golf Course and through the woods to Little Brickhill where we stopped for coffee. Taking the Greensand Ridge Walk we walked past Jobs Farm and through the Wayn Close, with its views of Woburn Abbey, into Woburn where we had lunch. On leaving Woburn we returned to Woburn Sands via Horsemoor Farm and the woods at Wavenden Heath.  This walk contributed 196000 steps towards the Northamptonshire County Council 20 million steps campaign over the weekend of the walk.

A Walk by the Nene - 28th August 2016

Barnwell Country Park - Barnwell - Polebrook - Ashton - 9.25 Miles - 266 ft Ascent

Leaving Barnwell Country Park by the old Oundle Road we walked to Barnwell village and on past Barnwell Manor to Polebrook. From Polebrook we walked to the pretty village of Ashton returning to the Country Park beside the river Nene using the Nene Way. Lovely Walk in the Northamptonshire countryside.

Souldrop Circular - Evening Walk - 14th July 2016

Souldrop - Berry Spring Woods - Lee Farm - Yelknow Lane - 7 Miles - 432ft Ascent

18 of us started from the Bedford Arms in Souldrop on a beautiful July evening to walk 4 miles around the surrounding countryside. The first part of the walk took us from Souldrop around the fields to the bridge over the railway at Berry Spring Woods. From here we walked towards Santa Pod and on to Lee Farm and the Yelknow Lane. This had been churned up by trail bikes and was almost unwalkable. We diverted off through the nature reserve and the golf course back to Lee Farm and then on back to Souldrop. A planned 4 miles turned into 7 miles it gave us a twilight finish to the walk and a welcome drink in the pub. 

Eydon - Culworth - Chipping Warden Circular - Sunday 26th June 2016

Eydon - Culworth - Trafford House - Edgcote - Chipping Warden - 9 Miles - 781ft Ascent

From the lovely west Northamptonshire village of Eydon 13 of us walked across the rolling countryside to the village of Culworth. From here we walked to the medieval village of Trafford and Trafford House. Here we joined the Battlefields Trail and walked to Chipping Warden via Edgcote. We had lunch at The Griffin after which we walked back to Eydon. on the Macmillan Way. Great walk on a sunny day.

Denton - Brafield-on-the Green Circular - Evening Walk - 8th June 2016

Denton - Furze Farm - Brayfield on the Green - 4.25 Miles - 190ft Ascent

Twelve of us left the Red Lion Pub in Denton on a sunny June evening for a circular walk though the meadows and the frisky bullocks and heifers to Furze Farm. From Furze farm we walked to Brafield-on-the-Green, on through the village past the green and pond and back across the fields to Denton to a welcome drink in the pub.

Slipton - Twywell - Drayton Park Estate - Evening Walk -  Thursday 19th May 2016

Slipton - Twywell - Drayton Park - Circular – 3½ Miles - 150ft Ascent

From the Samuel Pepys pub we walked in drizzle across the meadows to Twywell. We walked through Twywell and across the old quarry workings into the Drayton Park Estate returning to Slipton via the church. Here we witnessed the evidence of the collapsed bench outside of the church. Please see the Tortoise Walk below. We finished a great evening off with a drink in the pub.

Nene Park - Ferry Meadows - Sunday 24th April 2016

Ferry Meadows Visitor Centre - Orton Lock - River Nene - Gunwade Ferry  - Castor Mills - Nene Valley Railway - 7.25 Miles - 150ft Ascent

On a beautiful sunny but cool April day thirteen of us walked a circular walk around the Ferry Meadows Country Park. We walked along the Nene and through the park including the railway. Great Day.

Weald of Kent - Weekend Away - Sunday 3rd April 2016

Sevenoaks - Knowle Park - Godden Woods - Godden Green - Broardhoath - Ightham Mote - Wilmont Shingle - Rooks Hill  - 8 Miles - 950ft Ascent.

From Sevenoaks Lesiure Centre twelve of us walked through Knole Park and its very tame deer, through Godden Woods to Godden Green and its duck pond. On through the Lavender Fields at Broadhoath and to the National Trust Property at Ightham Mote. Following the Greensand Way we wound our way back over Wilmont, Shingle and Rooks Hills beautifull rolling wooded countryside. Over One Tree Hill and back to Sevenoaks through Knole Park. Lovely walk with sun all day

Weald of Kent - Weekend Away - Saturday 1st April 2016

Westerham - Squerryes Court - Goodley Stock Woods - Cearne - Treverloux - Crockham Hill - Chartwell House - Toys Hill - French Street - Hosey Common - 8.75 Miles - 1311ft Ascent

Eleven of us left a wet and soggy Westerham via a footpath over the river Darant, past Squerryes Court and on climbing through Goodley Stock Woods to The Cearne.  After admiring the view over the weald we dropped down through the bluebell woods to Treverloux, from here up the hill to Crockham Hill where we had coffee. After viewing the grave of Octavia Hill we walked through woods with Wood Anemone's, Marsh Marigolds and Comfrey in them. On to Chartwell House with its Oast Houses we walked up Puddledock Lane into Toys Hill where we had lunch overlooking the weald. After lunch we followed a path up Toys Hill and on through the woods to French Street. We then dropped down the hill through Hosey Common back to Westerham. Superb walk.

Brampton Way - Harlestone - Sunday 27th March 2016

Brampton Way Car Park - Harlestone Firs - Upper Harlestone - Lower Harlestone - Church Brampton - Chapel Brampton - Boughton Mill -  8.75 Miles - 475ft Ascent

Eleven of us met at the Brampton Way Car Park and walked through Harlestone Firs via the Brampton Way to Upper Harlestone and Lower Harlestone where we had lunch at the Fox & Hounds. We then walked back through Church Brampton, Chapel Brampton and Boughton Mill. Lovely varied walk

Welford - Sibbertoft  - Sunday 28th February 2016

Sulby Reservior  - Welford - Sibbertoft - Sulby  Lodge - 8.5 Miles 363ft Ascent

Sixteen of us met at the Sulby Reservior Car Park on a cold but sunny day. We walked into Welford to the canal basin and followed the Welford Village Walk through the marina and on to Hall Lane into the village. Past the church we left the village by the Shakespears Avon Way. We soon crossed the River Avon (little more than a stream here) and walked through pasture fields alongside the river to Sibbertoft where we had lunch at the Red Lion. After lunch we left the village by the churchyard and walked on the Jurasic Way past Sulby Lodge and the site of the Old Sulby Medieval Village back to the car park via the causeway across the reservoir. A great varied walk.

Pattishall - Gayton Circular - Sunday 31st January 2016

Pattishall - Grand Union Canal - Gayton - Dalscote - Eastcote - Astcote - 8.75 Miles -  533ft Ascent

Eight of us started from Church Street in Pattishall, in some fine but very wet rain, past the church and through Manor Farm. On northwards through very muddy and squelchy fields to the Grand Union Canal near Bugbrooke. Here we turned right along the canal towpath towards Gayton. The rain stopped for our coffee break at bridge number 40. After coffee we walked for another 2 miles on the towpath and turn off right up the hill into Gayton where we had lunch on the village green. After lunch we headed back towards Pattishall, passing through the lovely villages of Dalscote, Eastcote and Astcote. We arrived at Pattishall very soggy and muddy but we all agreed it had been a great walk.
