Higham Ferrers- Higham Ferrers Nature Reserve - Tortoise Walk - 21st December 2018

Higham Ferrers – Nature Reserve – 3¼ Miles – 153ft Ascent

The walk started in Higham by the cemetery and then along College Street and down Wharf Road.  We took the footpath before the river through the pocket park and followed the Nene through the houses until we got to the bridge over the road.  The river was crossed and then we walked  on a path to the lock. Then along the old railway track and up Kings Meadow Lane.   It rained at the start of a walk but stopped and we were fortunate to have a dry walk for the most part.

Bozeat & The Three Shires Way - 9th December 2018 - Pre Christmas Lunch Walk

Bozeat - White House Farm - Three Shires Way - Harold Park Farm - 4.25 miles - 123ft Ascent

Starting from Bozeat High Street on a dark and damp December morning 19 of us took the footpath south over a series of very high stiles to White House Farm. From the farm we walked across a series of fields to a pond by a disused barn. Here we stopped for a short coffee break. After our break we walked to the junction with the Three Shires Way. Turning left we walked North East for 1.5 miles through some woods and scrubland, On reaching Harold Park Farm we turned left off the Three Shires Way and walked back to Bozeat. By the time we finished it had turned into a lovely bright winter's day and the walk gave us an real appetite for our Christmas Lunch at Knuston Hall.

Earls Barton - Ecton - 4th December 2018 - Tortoise Walk

Earls Barton - South Lodge - Ecton - 4 Miles – 394ft Ascent

There were 9 walkers on a fresh but bright morning.  The walk started at Earls Barton and crossed fields leading to Ecton.   We walked around Ecton then followed the same footpath back to Earls Barton. 

East Farndon - Lubenham - 24th November 2018

East Farndon - Jurassic Way - Dicks Hill - Marston Trussell - Lubenham Hall - Lubenham - East Farndon - 8 Miles - 450ft Ascent

18 of us walked from a layby on the Oxendon Road near East Farndon on a cold overcast grey morning. We followed the Jurassic Way through the village and then South West over rolling countryside with great views to Dicks Hill where we stopped for coffee. From here we turned North towards Marston Trussell for 1.5 miles. At Marston Trussell we made our way through Lubenham Hall and on to Lubenham where we stopped for lunch at the Coach & Horses. After lunch we retraced our steps towards East Farndon. After climbing the hill on the approach to East Farndon we turned North East to walk past New House Farm  and then south again on a Bridleway which took us up a steep hill back to the cars. The afternoon had turned sunny and bright which meant by the time we finished it was chilly. Great walk over rolling countryside with fantastic views. Highly recommended.

Hinton in the Hedges - 28th October 2018

Hinton in the Hedges - Steane Park - Farthinghoe (Coffee Break) - Newbottle - Charlton (Lunch Break) - Hinton in the Hedges Airfield - 9.25 Miles - 682ft Ascent

On a very bright but very windy day 12 of us started from Hinton in the Hedges (near Brackley) and headed north out of the village towards the A422 and Steane Park. From Steane Park we continued on to Abbey Lodge Farm where we took the Bridle path into Farthinghoe where we stopped for coffee in the children's playground. After our coffee we walked on a path through the undulating Farthinghoe Park with magnificent views over the Cherwell Valley. On to Rosamonds Bower and Newbottle from here we walked into Charlton where we had lunch at the Rose & Crown. Leaving Charlton after lunch we headed for the Hinton in the Hedges airfield where we watched the skydivers, gliders and light aircraft taking off and landing in the strong wind. We then carried on back to Hinton in the Hedges to finish the walk. Great walk with stunning views.

500th Tortoise Walk - 26th October 2018

Great Doddington - Summer Leys Circular - 2.75 miles – 175ft Ascent

The walk was a celebration of the Tortoise Group doing 500 walks.  The walk covered the route that had been walked on the first Tortoise Walk.  It started from Great Doddington  down the hill to Hardwater Crossing and then around Summer Leys back to Doddington via Wollaston Lock.  The weather was sunny and stayed dry.

Melchbourne Circular Walk  13th October 2018  (a walk in memory of Dick Sanders) - Tortoise Group

Melchbourne - Worleys Wood - Coppice Wood - 3 Miles - 100ft Ascent

10 walkers set off from the main street going south past the thatched cottages taking a footpath to the right past the church.  Passing through a wooded area and making our way to the edge of Worley’s Wood.  After a short distance we turned left along a footpath that runs along the edge of Copice Wood.  Carrying on back towards Melchbourne we proceeded along a  grass track. where we turned left then right through a farmyard. Reaching a stile into an open field we crossed the field back to the cars.

Autumn Weekend - Sunday Walk - Thorney Island Circular - 7th October 2018

Thorney Island Yacht Club - Wickor Point - Marker Point - Longmere Point - West Thorney - Thornham Point - 7.25 miles - 78ft Ascent

Starting from Thorney Island Yacht Club in Elmsworth 15 of us set off on a absolutely beautiful sunny autumn day for a walk around the island. Leaving the yacht club we walked south alongside the Elmsworth Channel  for a mile to the entrance to the MOD base. Passing through a fortified gate we continued on around past Wickor Point and on to Marker Point where we had a coffee break. We continued after our break past the disused airfield on to Longmere Point which is the halfway point on the walk. Turning north we made our way to West Thorney where we stopped for another break and also explored the churchyard and its military graveyard. On leaving West Thorney we walked with Thorney Channel on our right to Thornham Point where we turned off inland to walk back to the the yacht club. A  great walk of many contrasts with an amazing change in weather from the day before.

Autumn Weekend - Chichester - Saturday Walk - 6th October 2018

Chichester Station - Chichester Canal - Chichester Marina - Dell Quay - Apuldram Church - 8.75 Miles - 75ft Ascent

Staying at the Bear Hotel in Havant we had an unusual but exciting start to the walk by catching the train to Chichester. Leaving the station on a heavily overcast day 16 of us walked to the Chichester Canal and took the towpath towards Chichester Marina  stopping near Hunston for coffee. We then walked on to the marina stopping, for lunch at the marina cafe we watched it start to rain heavily as we had our lunch. Leaving the cafe in the pouring rain we took a permissive path alongside the Chichester Channel to the Dell Quay. From here we continued on the public footpath towards Chichester diverting off to Apuldram Church to shelter from the pouring rain and have a break. Retracing our steps we continued alongside the channel towards Fishbourne. Having decided we were too wet to visit the Cathedral we walked back to the station and caught the train back to Havant. Despite the weather it was a lovely walk alongside the sea and the canal.

Burton Latimer Wold Wind Farm – 30th September 2018

Cranford - The Round House - Burton Latimer Wold - Burton Latimer - 30th September 2018 - 8.5 Miles - 452ft Ascent 

13 of us walked from Cranford St Andrew on a breezy sunday morning through the Burton Latimer Wind Farm to the Round House which celebrates the Battle of Waterloo stopping for coffee near Fox Colvert Farm. From the Round House we walked through Burton Wold and its farm into Burton Latimer where we had lunch at the Duke Pub.  After lunch we walked through the town out to the by-pass where we crossed and took the track past Blackbridge Farm. Crossing the A14 we dropped down to the Kettering - Cranford Road. Taking a footpath towards Grafton Underwood. After 1/2 mile we turned right and took a path back to Cranford St Giles and then back to the cars at Cranford St Andrew. A walk in the constant shadow of the Wind Turbines which can be seen for miles in this part of Northamptonshire.

Cople - Greensand Ridge – Willington – 26th August 2018

Cople - Greensand Ridge - Willington - 9.25 miles - 233ft Ascent

On a very wet and grey sunday morning we walked from the car park in Cople through Water End to follow the Park Lane track up on to the Greensand Ridge. Following the Greensand Ridge Walk for 2.5 miles we dropped down off the ridge into Willington where we had lunch at the Crown. After lunch we walked to the Danish Camp and followed the Bedford - Sandy  Country Walk path towards Bedford. Turning off the path after a mile to walk back to Cople. 

Barton Seagrave & Wickstead Park - Tortoise Walk – 24th August 2018

Barton Seagrave - Ise Valley - Wickstead Park – 3¾ Miles – 198ft Ascent  

Eight of us started the walk from The Stirrup Cup Barton Seagrave. The weather was just right for walking – dry with a light wind.   The walk was very interesting as we were shown where the sites of the castle and Medieval village were and the various points of historical interest along the way.  After walking through Barton Seagrave we walked across the footpaths and into the bottom of Wickstead Park.  Noting that the waterchute was still there.  The A6 was crossed and the walk followed the flood meadows. Then back into Wickstead Park passing the animals and stopping for a coffee at the Café.  After a bit of refreshment we headed back to the start. But unfortunately we did not get back before the rain came down and we had to shelter under a convenient tree. 

Little Staughton Walk - Tortoise Walk – 11th August 2018

Little Staughton Circular – 3¾ Miles – 177ft Ascent

The walk started at the The Crown. 14 of us turned right out of the car park and headed uphill to the end of the road.  Crossing the road then along a footpath to the church.  Continuing along the footpath we saw fantastic views across the wheat fields as we headed towards the site of the old moat and earthworks.  We then headed for White House Farm and the road that went to Colmforth which we crossed. We then took the footpaths and bridle paths that led back to Green End. A sunny day but not too hot.

The Langtons – 29th July 2018

Stonton Wyville - Tur Langton - Church Langton - East Langton - Thorpe Langton - 7 Miles - 560ft Ascent 

12 of us walked from the hamlet of Stonton Wyville on a very wet and windy Sunday morning to walk around the Leicestershire countryside.  Walking over the rolling hills we walked first to Tur Langton where we stopped for coffee on the village green. After coffee we walked across the fields to Church Langton through Home Farm where a Cedar of Lebanon tree had lost a large bough in the high winds. Leaving Church Langton we walked to East Langton where we stopped for lunch at the very hospitable Bell Inn who allowed us to sit in the bar out of the rain to eat our sandwiches. After lunch we walked on to Thorpe Langton and then climbed up the Langton Caudle to the trig point, where despite the cloud, we had magnificent views over the Welland Valley. We then dropped down off the hill back to Stonton Wyville. All agreed that although it had been wet and windy it had been a lovely walk

Butterfly Walk - Fermyn Woods - Tortoise Group – 6th July 2018

Fermyn Woods Country Park - Fermyn Woods – 3 Miles – 135ft Ascent

The walk started at the Country Park and led into a meadow with long grass which was ideal for the butterflies.  We followed the edge of the field on one side and the wood on the other.  The walk then went into the wood which was good because it was getting very hot. The path took us through the area where the rare Purple Emperor Butterfly inhabits.  A very welcome drink in Skylark Café finished a very interesting walk.

Morcott – Harringworth – 24th June 2018

Morcott - Harringworth - 7.25 Miles - 500ft Ascent

Twelve members started from Morcott High Street. then through a field path to the A47 crossed over and followed Morcott road to Barrowden to join Jurassic Way towards Harringworth with a break at Turtle Bridge then on by the River Welland to Harringworth for another break [the pub in Harringworth is closed]. Then under the viaduct to Seaton for the lunch stop in the church yard, [the pub in Seaton is now a posh restaurant and does not welcome people in funny hats and rucksacks]. That made it 5 miles, we offered a choice of routes back to Morcott either another 4.5 or 2 miles, everyone opted for the direct return of 2 miles, on which we were treated to a flypast by a Lancaster bomber. 

Swineshead - Swineshead Woods - Tortoise Group – 9th June 2018

Swineshead – Swineshead Woods – 4¾ Miles – 173ft Ascent

The weather was dry but a little dull at the beginning of the walk.  There were 12 walkers. The walk started at the Church and headed up Sandye Lane to Swineshead Wood.  We walked around the parameter of the wood back to where we first entered.   Then back up Sandye Lane to the edge of Spanoak Wood turning right along a farm track.  After about 25 yards we turned right at a wooden bridge over a ditch and walked towards a waymark post.  The walk followed a farm track with a hedge on the right side and led down to Pertenhall Road.  Then we turned right and then right up the High Street to the Church.

Sharnbrook - Felmersham Bridge - Tortiose Walk - Tuesday 29th May 2018

Sharnbrook - Felmersham Bridge - Nature Reserves – 3¼ Miles - 99ft Ascent

Eleven of us left Sharnbrook  via the Ouse Valley Way towards Felmersham. Passing the old Windmill we walked down to the River Ouse at Pinchmill Islands and on by the river to Felmersham Bridge. Turning right we walked on the causeway to the entrance to the Nature Reserves. From here we walked through the Nature Reserves and on to a footpath which took us through the houses back to Sharnbrook.

Annual Outing - London - A Walk Around the Royal Parks - 13th May 2018

Princess Diana Memorial Walk - Shorter Walk 4.5 Mile - Longer Walk 7.75 Miles - Parliament Square - St James Park - Buckingham Palace - Constitution Hill - Hyde Park Corner - The Serpentine - Albert Hall - Kensington Palace - Kensington Gardens - Italian Gardens (End of Tortoise Walk) - Hyde Park - Bomber Command Memorial - Green Park - St James Park - Parliament Square

Leaving Rushden at 8am 40 members and guests left for London. After a 2 hour coach ride we arrived at Parliament Square. Here we split into groups 15 for the short walk and 22 for the longer walk. Three of us not walking. The route took us through Horseguards Parade into St James Park where we stopped at the cafe for a coffee and a comfort break. From the Cafe we followed the path by the lake to Buckingham Palace and the Queen Victoria Memorial where we joined the crowd for the Changing of the Guard. After a challenging few minutes of getting through the crowd we walked up Constitution Hill to the Wellington Memorial and Hyde Park Corner. Crossing into Hyde Park we walked through the beautiful Rose Gardens to the Serpentine. Walking around the Serpentine to the Lido where the people on the shorter walk had Lunch. On from the Lido a walk around the  Princess Diana Memorial Fountain and on to the Albert Memorial / Royal Albert Hall. From here we walked to Kensington Palace and through Kensington Gardens to the Magic Tree. From here we walked to Long Water and the Peter Pan statue and on to the Italian gardens where the longer walk had lunch and the shorter walk finished. After lunch we walked through Hyde Park past the Four Winds Statue back to Hyde Park Corner into Green Park to the magnificent Bomber Command Memorial. Back through Green Park where we were directed by a very young policeman (see photos).On to Buckingham Palace which was a lot quieter now and through St James Park to Parliament Square. The weather was perfect for walking and the walk truly memorable. A day not to be forgotten.

Farthingstone - Blakesley - 29th April 2018

Farthingstone - Litchborough - Blakesley - Maidford - 9.75 Miles  600ft Ascent

On a wet, cold, grey and windy morning 18 of us set off from Farthingstone towards Litchborough  soon crossing the first of 44 stiles on the route we climbed the hill into the lovely village of Litchborough. Passing by the church and then on through Litchborough Estate and Tivey Farm to the source of the River Tove. Walking by the river for a mile we stopped for coffee in a spot out of the bitter wind. On by the Seawell Valley Study Centre and Banbury Lane we walked across the fields into Blakesley. We walked through the village to the Bartholomew Arms where we stopped for lunch in the sheltered garden. After lunch we left Blakesely, passing the windmill and taking the bridle path to Fulling Mill. Here we crossed the mill race and walked past the gallops up hill into Maidford. Stopping to take a short break we admired the view from the top of the hill. Leaving Maidford we passed  Manor Farm and Maidford Lodge on our way back to Farthingstone. We decided to go back to the village by the road as the recent rain had made the footpath unwalkable through a field with horses in it. Despite the weather we all agreed it had been a great day.

Emberton -Tyringham - Sherington Circular - Sunday 25th February 2018

Emberton - Tyringham Hall & Church - Sherington - Emberton - 9.25 miles - 405ft Ascent 

On a very cold but beautifully sunny February day 17 of us walked on frozen footpaths across what would have been very muddy fields to Filgrave. Here taking the Three Shires Way and the Ouse Valley Way past Ash and Bakers Spinneys we watched the race horses on the gallops before walking through Hill Plantation to Fences Farm. From here it was a short stroll to Tyringham Hall and Tyringham Church where we stopped for Coffee. After coffee we retraced our steps back on to the Ouse Valley Way we followed the River Great Ouse before branching off to walk past End Farm into Sherington. Walking through the village we stopped for lunch in the White Hart pub. After lunch we walked past the village school taking a bridle path east across the A509 towards Gowle's Farm. Just before the farm we took a bridle path on the left on to Seven Acre Covert. From here we dropped down the hill towards Petsoe End stopping on the way in a secluded spot for an afternoon drink. Crossing a minor road we proceeded through a series of fields with horses in past Rectory Farm and then back across the A509 into Emberton.  We had brilliant sun all day with a biting easterly wind but this did not detract from what was a lovely walk.

Felmersham - Radwell - Tortoise Walk - 29th March 2018

Felmersham Nature Reserve - Pinchmill Islands - Radwell - Felmersham - 3.5 Miles - 122ft Ascent

14 of us set off from the car park at Felmersham Nature Reserve on a damp morning. Walking through the nature reserve we turned off the Ouse Valley Way through the series of bridges over the river at Pinchmill Islands. We then took the uphill path out of the valley to the village of Radwell. Going on through the village and back to Felmersham and then along the road to the car park. We missed the rain which started as we got back to the cars.

Spring Weekend - 2018 - South Downs - Sunday Walk - Sunday 25th March 2018

Alfriston - Cuckmere River - High & Over White Horse - Cradle Hill - Rathfinny Winery  -  France Bottom - 7 Miles - 776ft Ascent

Leaving Alfriston by the same route as the Saturday walk 12 of us walked across the river Cuckmere footbridge and turned right for a delightful walk by the river. After 1.5 miles we took a footpath right up the High & Over hill and its chalk white horse. At the top we crossed a minor road and walked across Cradle Hill on a ridge track called The Comp. As we walked we overlooked the extensive Rathfinny Winery and its fields of vines. After a further 2 miles on the ridge we took a footpath to the right and dropped down into Blackstone Bottom. Climbing out of the bottom we walked up to Cross Dyke, on to France Bottom and then back to Alfriston. A walk with spectacular views over the Cuckmere Valley highly recommended.

Spring Weekend - 2018 - South Downs - Saturday Walk - Saturday 24th March 2018

Alfriston - The Long Man - Wilmington Priory - Jevington - Lullington Heath - 8.75 Miles - 1285ft Ascent

13 of us left the long stay car park in Alfriston on a damp and cold Saturday morning. Walking through the pretty village with its flint houses we took a footpath path past the church and over a bridge crossing the river Cuckmere. Turning left we walked alongside the river to Long Bridge. Here we walked uphill over the downs stopping for coffee close to to the Long Man (which is a chalk figure of a man on the hillside). From here we dropped down to the Wilmington Priory and on over the downs to Folkington Church, along the Wealdway and Crandown Bottom to the village of Jevington and a welcome drink at the pub where we had lunch. After lunch we walked past the church and climbed the hill up on to Lullington Heath which is a National Nature Reserve, Passing Cross Dyke we walked down the hill to Lullington and back to the car park at Alfriston. A fantastic walk across some of the best of the South Downs 

Kinewell Lakes - 29th January 2018

Kinewell Lakes Car Park - Woodford Mill - Woodford Church - 4.5 miles. 

There were 15 walkers.   We walked from Kinewell Car Park to Woodford Mill, taking the footpath behind the mill, then heading towards old railway track which we crossed and then on to Woodford Church.  Then back along the same path to Kinewell Lake taking the footpath round the opposite side of the lake back to the car park.

Summer Leys and Great Doddington Circular - 28th January 2019

Summer Leys - Great Doddington Circular - 4.25 Miles - Short walk prior to the re-arranged Christmas Dinner

22 of us set out from the Summer Leys Car Park on a cloudy, cool day. Walking around the perimeter path we took a very wet and muddy footpath over the River Nene and up the hill into Great Doddington. Passing by the Church we stopped for coffee at the Recreation Field. After our coffee we joined the Nene Way passing by some Alpaca's and a new Vineyard we stopped to admire the view over the Nene Valley. Dropping down the hill to the strangely named Wollaston Mill (its much nearer Great Doddington) we walked around the Doddington Crossing Lake on to Summer Leys and the bird hives back to the Car Park in the sunshine. A varied but very wet walk

Summer Leys - Tortiose Walk - 11th January 2018

Summer Leys Circuit – 2 Miles – 18ft Ascent

12 walkers set off on a dull but dry morning.  The walk started by turning right from the car park then taking a path that led to a bird hide then to a bird feeding area.  We then walked along the old railway track to Hardwater Crossing and then turned left back to the car park.
